Music

Our St John Vianney Music Curriculum is informed by the Model Music Curriculum and is delivered through the structured planning provided by Charanga Music School, which we follow to ensure a comprehensive and progressive approach to music education.

  • Within every unit, pupils engage in listening, singing, movement, instrumental playing, improvisation, composition and performance across a wide range of musical styles.
  • Teaching places strong emphasis on the elements of music, enabling pupils to build secure foundations and deepen their musical understanding over time. Each unit includes a clearly defined Musical Spotlight, which identifies specific musical elements and activities that are explored in depth and embedded throughout the learning sequence.
  • Units are also framed around age-appropriate Social Questions and pupils are encouraged to reflect on the world around them, their communities and relationships. From Year 1 to Year 6, six key Social Questions are revisited through a spiral curriculum, supporting increasingly mature understanding as pupils progress through the school.

Year 4 take part in the Wider Opportunity programme, learning to play a musical instrument as a class. Pupils in Year 5 and 6 have the opportunity to have small group music lessons to continue their musical journey on their flutes and clarients.
