At St John Vianney, our vision statement forms the backdrop to all that we do in school, including the support and provision that we have for our children who have additional needs. We strive to support all children to enable them to achieve and believe that early identification of children’s additional needs is vital to them developing independence and skills that will support them along their journey and form the foundations for lifelong learning.
Communication with Parents and Carers is essential and we endeavour to form positive relationships to enable us to work in partnership together to meet the needs of the children.
In order to do this many steps are taken to support children through their learning journey. Quality first teaching is vital; however, for some children there are occasions where further support may be needed to help them to achieve and make progress. To ensure that children’s needs are identified at the earliest possible opportunity, we adopt a graduated approach.
This is a summary of our graduated approach for SEND and for any children with additional needs, more detailed information can be found in our SEND Policy and documents below.
Graduated Approach
Stage 1
Parents/Carers share any concerns with their child’s class teacher or SENCo. A short, fixed term plan will be agreed and implemented. This will be reviewed and collectively discussed, with agreed next steps.
Stage 2
If concerns remain, the class teacher will discuss these with the SENDCo. A formal plan will be implemented via an IEP (Individual Education Plan), where targets will be agreed and reviewed each term (three times per year) with Parents/Carers. Progress towards these targets will be monitored. Children will be recorded on the school’s SEND register.
Stage 3
It may be necessary to discuss the child’s needs with external professionals such as health professionals or other agencies. We will always seek parental consent before we discuss your child. The aim would be to seek further recommendations and support for your child. You may be invited to meetings to share your concerns, views and aspirations. Parental engagement through attendance at school for appointments, parents evening, additional work that is sent home to support your child, are all essential for the best possible outcome.
If you would like to discuss any concerns that you may have or believe that your child may have additional needs, we invite you to contact the school or arrange a time to visit and have a look around our provision.
